Assumptions
For ease of analysis, the following assumptions are reasonable regarding the average cost of coaxial cable and compression fittings that are used in the calculations below. Those assumptions are as follows:
Materials Costs
- Coaxial Cable Cost: The majority of the cable being sold into the marketplace today is 77% braid tri-shield. For purposes of this analysis, it is assumed that the cost for this cable is between $0.07 and $0.09 per foot. A standard jumper will be 6 feet in length. Using $0.07/ft for cable cost, a 6 foot jumper uses $0.42 of cable.
- Compression Connector Cost: For purposes of this analysis, it is assumed that the cost for each compression connector is between $0.20 and $0.25 each, based on the connector used. A jumper uses two connectors. Using $0.23 each for connectors, a 6 foot jumper uses $0.46 of connectors.
Labor Costs
- Technician Cost: Using an average $12 per hour technician rate and a 30% overhead cost, the total technician cost is $15.60.
- Average Time to Make a Jumper: Two minutes is the average time it takes to make one jumper. At the above cost per hour, the labor cost associated with making one jumper is $0.52.
Based on the above, the combined materials and labor costs for one jumper made in the field is:
$0.88 Total Materials + $0.52 Total Labor
Technician Made Jumper Total Cost = $1.40
Estimated cost of purchasing one jumper manufactured by PCT is:
PCT Manufactured Jumper Total Cost = $0.80
per Jumper Savings = $0.60
Assessment of Savings
By purchasing jumpers from PCT, customers save $0.60 per jumper. Additionally, with each PCT custom jumper used on an installation, the technician also saves two minutes of productivity in the field.
Benefits of PCT Manufactured Jumpers
Benefits of purchasing custom manufactured jumpers from PCT include:
- PCT uses a fully automated manufacturing process with significant quality benefits.
- PCT guarantees the quality and craftsmanship of its jumper cable products.
- The risk of an installer incorrectly preparing cable, using unapproved cable (cable existing within the residence), and/or incorrectly installing the connectors is eliminated.
- The potential savings are so significant that a premium jumper cable (e.g. integrated lock washer) could be purchased, further “hardening the drop” and eliminating significant amounts of truck rolls related to faulty / loose connections.
The Bottom Line
PCT has an unquestionable materials cost advantage, which greatly benefit our customers.
We manufacture the cable and the connectors.
We own the state-of-the-art domestic jumper cable production facility.
And, because PCT’s jumper manufacturing lines are heavily automated, our cost-of-labor advantages are obvious over jumpers made in the field.
The overall bottom line is costs savings and the highest quality jumpers for our customers’ installations.
